Conservation Conveyor

Designed as an interactive exhibit for the Ditchling Beacon Visitors Centre, geared towards educating and fostering an interest in conservation and sustainability among children aged 5 and above alongside their families and/or educators.

Its aim was to explain and inform on the biodiversity of the local ecosystem, including flora, fauna, and wildlife in the area while fostering a deeper appreciation for the natural world. By engaging children in hands-on activities and immersive experiences, the exhibit will empower them to become stewards of the environment and advocates for biodiversity preservation.

The top of the table holds a scale map of the beacon made from recycled plastic bottles. Visitors can trace their path around the beacon and explore the geography from the comfort of the visitor's centre. The display is set on a turntable to allow users to view from all angles, from a stationary position. As the conveyor turns a different part of the 3D map illuminates alongside a corresponding compartment, showing where this habitat can be found on the beacon. The 5 compartments each contain a diorama of a different ecosystem and habitat that can be found on the beacon, demonstrating the area's diversity. Its low-level means the map and compartments can be viewed easily by children, or those in wheelchairs at eye level.
